PaulCatherall: Sent from Coventry is at Eames Fine Art until 6 June
Paul Catherall’s new exhibition of linocuts of Modernist architecture features buildings from Coventry (his hometown) and London; also, one from Vancouver.
Paul Catherall was raised in Coventry and spent his formative years there; as he later reflected the Modernist architecture of that city left a subconscious mark and he has found himself drawn to the bold forms of Modernism and Brutalism, from the Coventry ‘Elephant’ (part of a leisure complex) to the now largely demolished Elephant & Castle in London. These have both found expression in his beautiful linocut prints which emphasise the sculptural forms of the Modernist structures.
The exhibition is, in part, a celebration of Coventry’s architectural heritage and neatly coincides with the beginning of Coventry’s year as UK City of Culture. However, this is a bitter-sweet conjunction – as many of the buildings beautifully represented in these prints are threatened with demolition and redevelopment.
